On Sunday the great trotting action of the past weekend came to a finish with the running of the $25 000 Listed Echuca Cup (2530m) where the classy pacer Dazed And Confused claimed victory.

A five-year-old daughter of Troublemaker the Dean Braun-trained Dazed And Confused ($4.70) defeated surprise second placegetter and longest-priced runner Mister Douglas ($36.70) by 4.4m with Very Chic less than a metre back in third.

It was a great finish for runner-up Mister Douglas after being held up early and sitting three back on pegs at the bell.

Very Chic began badly but made up ground by using the sprint lane to come in a gallant third.

Pre-race favourite Miss Laura Jane ($3.60) crossed the line a devastating third last in ninth place after a poor start from barrier four.

It was also a sad finish for last year’s Echuca Cup third-placegetter Mystical Warrior ($13.40). The seven-year-olds’ trainer Glenn Freeman was hoping to improve on last year but came in a dismal sixth after racing roughly and being held up.

Mystical Warrior did however do one better than the defending Echuca Cup champion, Wideford Hill in seventh. Wideford Hill led at the bell but dropped out of contention under pressure.

Driven by Rodney Petroff, Dazed And Confused originally trailed the early leader Wideford Hill, but then took full advantage of her access to the sprint lane in the run home.

Dazed And Confused, who took out the Group 1 Australian Pacing Gold Final two years back, is now hoping for an invitation to the Group 1 $100 000 Ladyship Mile on April 25.

One of the feature pacing events held at Tabcorp Park, Melton last Friday night was the $40 000 Group 3 VHRSC Victoria Sires Classic (2240m) where Enthral claimed a narrow victory.

Enthral ($8.90), a three-year-old gelding, secured victory by a mere neck over the immensely popular Two Eye See ($3.70) with Modern Warrior over 5m back in third place.

The son of Modern Art, Enthral ran a solid mile rate of 1:59.5 clocking a gross time of 2:46.4 over the 2240m staying race.

It was a disappointing finish for the $2.40 favourite Palais Du Louvre who only placed seventh after leading early on. Palais Du Lourve performance was queried with the runner receiving a vet’s examination after the race and was stood down.

Friday night at Gloucester Park six-year-old New Zealand gelding Our Malabar claimed victory in the feature pacing event, the $60 000 Group 2 Lawsons Underwriting Australasia Celebrity Sprint MS Pace (1730m).

Starting the race as an outside chance at $21.80, the Bob Mellsop-trained and driven Our Malabar secured a shock 1.2m win ahead of Talk To Me Courage ($12.60) with Has The Answers ($2.90) just 0.30m back for third.

Our Malabar broke the track record with his scintillating mile rate of 1:54.2, which destroyed the previous 1730m WA record set by Sneakyn Down Under in October of 1:54.6. The winner now has a record of 23 wins from 83 career starts.

Odds-on favourite at $2.30, Fremantle Cup winner Im Themightyquinn failed to place for trainer Gary Hall on the night, finishing a dismal sixth nearly 14m back from the winner missing out on a minor prize by just one spot. He began at a fantastic pace but was out-raced in the final quarter, wilting after his hectic early effort.

Only eight horses contested the event following the scratching of Tee Pee Villate, HY Royale and Stage Coach Kid.

All eyes will be on Our Malabar for the remainder of the Perth’s summer pacing carnival as the son of Live Or Die looks set for big things this season. Mellsop will now aim him at the $125 000 Australian Pacing Championship (2130m) on January 8 and the $400 000 WA Pacing Cup (2536m) on January 22.
