CHARIOTS OF FIRE FIRST MAJOR CARNIVAL FOR TABCORP PARK MENANGLE
Media Release: NSWHRC
This season’s $200,000 Stallion Station Chariots of Fire Carnival will be held over three successive Friday nights during the month of July at Sydney’s new home of harness racing, Tabcorp Park Menangle.
On night one (Friday, July 16), the first of the $20,000 qualifiers will be run in the shape of the Hondo Grattan Stakes.
The race will be a random barrier draw conducted over the mile (1609 metres).
The winner of this race, as well as the next four horses across the line, will gain an automatic entry to contest the $200,000 Stallion Station Chariots of Fire a fortnight later.
The same conditions apply to the winner of the Paleface Adios Stakes, which is conducted a week before the Chariots on July 24.
Like the Hondo Grattan, it will be a random barrier draw event held over the mile.
Club Chief Executive John Dumesny confirmed that as there is now an increased number in each of the Hondo and Paleface Stakes, there will be only two qualifying events.
In the past, there has been as many as four qualifying events.
The Club Directors also reaffirmed that there will be no invitational aspect to the Group One Chariots of Fire.
With the Chariots of Fire moving from its original home of Harold Park to Tabcorp Park Menangle, the NSW Harness Racing Club has extended the field to contain 10 starters instead of the traditional eight, as the track size can accommodate an increased number of starters on the front line.
There will be 10 starters, plus two reserves, in the Chariots of Fire with the race to be conducted over a mile.
The two reserves will be the horses that finished sixth in the Hondo Grattan and Paleface Adios Sprints respectively, and will be determined in order of individual times in their respective qualifying events.
Breeding giants Stallion Station will once again sponsor the Group One Chariots of Fire, which will be held on July 31.
