Renaissance Man Wins SA Derby

Renaissance Man Wins SA Derby

Last Saturday night at Globe Derby, aside from the coveted SA Pacing Cup, the other big Group 1 feature of the meeting was the $30 000 Group 1 SEW-Eurodrive SA Derby, the 2230m staying race taken out by Renaissance Man.

Odds-on favourite at $2.20, the Kate Gath-driven Renaissance Man defeated the Mal Whiteford trained and driven Kamwood Jack ($3.40) by 4.9m, with long-priced outsider Korunye Kid ($65.20) coming in a surprise third after their driver, Matthew Jacques, was cautioned for being out of position at the start.

The three-year-old Art Major colt trained by Andy Gath, returning from a spell, ran a mile rate of 1:58.6 after hanging onto his outside lead.

The other fancied runner with the bookies pre-race was Mapua Legend ($5.30), who finished a disappointing eight despite a powerful run.
