Washakie Wins M H Treuer Memorial

Washakie Wins M H Treuer Memorial

On Saturday night the John McCarthy-trained Washakie took out the highly anticipated $100 000 Group 1 M H Treuer Memorial (2540m) at Bankstown.

A six-year-old bay gelding, Washakie ($8.30) defeated the favourite at $1.70, Barry Lew’s Karloo Mick by 3.8m with Queensland runner Atomic Ark ($80.60) a surprise third placegetter a further seven lengths back.

Nine-year-old Karloo Mick lead right up until the final mile, narrowly missing out on his first Group 1 victory as Washakie proved too strong in the end, taking over the lead on the outside as the pair battled it out down the straight in a fantastic last stage duel. The winner clocked a gross time of 3:08.5 in the 2540m staying test, with a mile rate of 1:59.4.

Trained in Western Australia, Washakie will now be aimed at the remaining classics this season after his stand out performance on Saturday night. His next test will be in the Group 1 $400 000 SEW Eurodrive Victoria Cup at Tabcorp Park.
